In Health terms a supplement is a natural occurring Mineral, Vitamin or Herb that promotes whole health.
Minerals are natural inorganic elements needed by the body for strong bones teeth and other support structures. Minerals can also activate hormones and are involved in vital enzyme systems in the body.
Like Vitamins, minerals are often lost in our ‘normal’ food process through excessive trimming, peeling and the factory food habit of pulling the fruit or vegetable too early in its growth cycle, so it can survive transportation.
Vitamins are essential organic substances that help the body perform necessary biochemical processes within cells and tissues. Vitamins do not provider calories, but they are fragile and easily destroyed by heat, light and exposure to the atmosphere. Most vitamins are not stored by the body and so need to be replaced regularly.
Herbs in terms of Health and Wellness are the wide variety of plants and parts of plants that are used for health and remedial health. Now there are some wild and wooly claims for all sorts of plants, but there are also documented and scientifically tested herbs and their benefits. Also most of the common herbs you find in health stores have a long history of use – some over 2000 years.

Why do I need a supplement?
You need to supplement because it is no longer possible to get all the nutrition we need from the food we eat.
Perhaps there was a time and a place – say Tahiti pre The West discovery, or New Guinea or The Americas before they were ‘discovered’ – that there were people who received all their nutrition just from their food. But that time is long gone, and those places are gone (in terms of nutrition).
Don’t forget in the ‘good old days’ in European and American white history, people lived short lives because there was disease and bad nutrition. There was Scurvy and Rickets and Diabetes and Beri Beri and Gout and every type of heart ailment – all that were directly caused by lack of nutrition.
In fact it is only very recently that Nutrition as a health item has even been taught in the medical facilities of the west

EATING RIGHT
Even now many people and doctors say if you just’ eat right’ there is no need for supplements.
Well this is true. But how do you eat right?
Almost all our food is factory grown, factory farms, and factory bred animals. The soil had been depleted in almost all of the Western World, and most of the rest of the planet. And due to the nature of Global Commerce, even Antarctica has pesticides in its remaining ice sheets
Plants get their nutrition from the soil. We get our nutrition only from the plants we eat and animals that eat the plants. If there is little or nutrition in the soil, and if the soil is also full of pesticides – then there is no nutrition anywhere in the chain.
Adding chemicals to our food doesn’t overcome the fact that our body needs ‘food nutrition’. We are unable to absorb many of the ‘chemical’ vitamins that are inserted into our foods. But, unfortunately we do absorb the trace pesticides and poisons and a lot of the steroids and estrogen that is inserted into the animals we eat. Unfortunately steroids are not really the supplement you and I need to stay health.
In fact a recent article in a leading medical journal says that all adults should take a multivitamin, daily. This is true even if you already eat a diet rich in fresh, whole, natural foods, because foods can’t supply all the vitamins and minerals you need, at the recommended levels. And when you go to buy a supplement, buy the best quality you can.

You are are absolutely right. We lead busy lifestyles, and as such don’t have time to make sure we eat foods that give the right things our bodies need to function properly. To makeup for what we don’t get, supplements becomes a must have.
